In the early days flow forming techniques has generally been used in military areas like aircrafts, missiles, satellites, weapons, communications, chemicals, nuclear, etc.. In recent years, flow forming techniques has been slowly applied to wheel hub industry, it is advanced craft combines the characters of crafts of forging or casting, extrusion, stretching, bending, annular rolling, cross rolling, edge rolling, etc. It is developed on the base of hot forging and casting techniques, flow forming after forging or casting into blank. This technique improves the manufacturing precision and intensity and greatly reduces the machining allowance. The flow forming wheel hub is not constrained by size, elegant, good performance and of high safety, material saving and energy saving, etc., all these become strong points in competition, the techniques in German, Japan and other developed countries are most mature. By flow forming, the wheel hubs produced are widely used in the racing track and refitted high-end cars. But within the country, there are only a few wheel companies use this technique to produce. Therefore, the wheel hubs using the flow forming technique in the domestic market is all the more so little.
At present, the manufacturing craft of aluminium alloy wheel hub mainly are: casting(gravity and low tension), forging(hot forging and cold forging) and flow forming. The properties of the three products all abide by the JWL standard of Japan, TUV standard of German, SFI standard of America and other international standards. The only difference in daily use is price and weight. The weight of the wrought wheel hub is the most light, and it has the best mechanical property, but it commonly use the aviation aluminum of T6061, the cost of it is much higher than the ordinary cast aluminum A356.2, thus it scare away many consumers with ordinary consuming capacity from buying. Although the price of the casted products are acceptable by the public, but often it is relatively heavy or of poor organizational structure, its mechanical property can not meet the radical car owners’ needs.
And now, the flow forming wheel hubs are chosen by more and more car owners for its acceptable price, lightweight and good performance. Flow forming was initially used in processing rim parts when forging wheels, afterwards it was gradually applied to the improvement of rims’ intensity when forging wheels. The technique of flow forming and casting has been perfectly combined, and the combination is especially noteworthy validated in the high-end wheel hubs in Japan. It is clear to see that flow forming wheels will be a new favorite of converted wheels for its close mechanical character and weight to forging wheels and cheaper price.
Compared with the casting wheels, flow forming wheels are much light in weight and have a high anti-collision performance and strong hardness performance.

FFP spinning technology belongs to the power spinning with spiral type, under high temperature condition, through strong spinning on the wheel casting semifinished product for several times, to change the thickness and shape of the semifinished product, so as to achieve size requirements of rim suface.
Metallographic structure of flow forming wheels
During spinning on the rim, the molecular arrangement of internal metal changed. Compared with the molecular organization before spinning, segmentation surface of molecular metallographic from after spinning product present higher density fibrous, it bring the denser microstructure, greatly enhance the overall mechanical properties. Pull rod test of flow forming wheels
The pull rod test of low pressure wheel can withstand maximum tensile force of 4349N, flow forming rods is 5670N, up more than 20% of the tensile strength than before. As shown in figure

X-ray detection system for online wheels, which can realize wheel type identification automatically, loading test for different specification online , detection of high grade, high image resolution, create the decision results automatically. For FFP flow forming wheel, the grade of rim, spokes roots, slag hole from upper/lower flange, shrinkage are higher than the industry standard of grade 2 or less, as shown in figure. For after flow forming rim, the grade of flaw detection is with the standard of 1st level, no slag hole, lockhole, bad porosity.

For FFP flow forming product ,the grade of main three performance tests (impact test, radial fatigue test and bend fatigue test) are 10% higher than Japan JWL/VIA standard. As shown in figure

It indirectly shows the lightweight and high toughness advantage of flow forming wheel sample after violent bending test, the casting samples breaks off easily, although the flow forming sample is more thinner, it does not break off even under the repeated action, it has full of indomitableness, It reflects that after a whack, it will not break easily, no more than out of shape, it can ensure the safety of extreme conditions. For casting wheels, on the premise of ensuring the safety of wheel, reducing the weight is a very difficult task. There is a saying online that manufacturers produce light wheel in order to reduce costs and cheat on workmanship and materials, yet this saying it not entirely true. In fact, there is close relationship between the weight and the structure, the structure of some wheels determine its lightness in weight and goodness in intensity. In addition, by strengthen the vulnerable parts and other methods, it can still achieve the goal of reducing weight.
